Investing Tips Based on Insider Trading Data

When it comes to investing tips, everyone seems to be an expert so it is very difficult to decide whose advice you should follow. The first question a novice investor should be asking anyone they’re thinking about following is, “What kind of returns have you been seeing with your own trades?” I’m sure that the answers you hear will surprise you.

Beware of Investing Tips from this Group

The vast majority of so called experts doling out investing tips don’t actually invest their own money in the stocks they recommend. More often, they are paid a commission regardless of whether you buy or sell and more disturbingly whether you make money on their recommendations or not. Sometimes their revenue is based on commissions and other times they’ll have you pay a subscription fee for their advice but vary rarely will they be compensated based on performance. That is to say, whether their investing tips are worth anything or not.

Investing Tips and Insider Trading

A better source for good investing tips is one you might not have thought of before. This is a group of investors that consistently out-performs the market year after year. They win because they have the best information and they play with their own money. The don’t offer investing tips per se but savvy investors know that not following what this group is doing could prove fatal to one’s portfolio.

Of course, we’re talking about corporate insiders. Insiders are defined as executives or directors of publicly-traded companies that have information and knowledge that can affect their company’s stock price. Hands-on insiders are ensconced in the day-to-day activities of their companies and they’re the ones making decisions that will affect the future value of their company. Naturally, they know their companies better than anyone and some great investing tips can be picked up by watching how they trade their own company shares on the open market.

For example, let’s say you’re looking for investing tips related to a stock in your portfolio. For fun, let’s call it Guru B Gone Corp. The company has a great reputation and you’re fairly happy with the way it has been performing for you so far this year. The returns haven’t been great but they’ve been a little better than what you’d get if that same money was in a savings account.

However, during your quest for investing tips related to this stock you stumble across InsidersLab.com and you see that a significant group of insiders at the company have all been selling off their shares around the same time. Would you want to know about that? Yes, you would. If one insider is selling her shares, it could mean anything but if a group is acting in a similar manner that is a strong signal that they feel the stock price might be heading down.

This isn’t necessarily the case and as with all investing tips, you would need to do your own due diligence prior to acting on such information but you would certainly want to know about such transactions. That is why InsidersLab.com exists – to offer average investors investing tips based on recent insider trading activity.
